Individualized Education Program
What is an IEP?
To qualify for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) under federal law (IDEA), two criteria must be met:
-
The student must have a disability that falls within one of the 13 categories defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
-
The disability must adversely impact the student’s educational performance, requiring specialized instruction and related services.
In other words, eligibility is not based solely on the presence of a diagnosis. The school team must determine that the student’s disability significantly affects their ability to learn, access the curriculum, or participate in the school environment without additional support.
